Bottom of the River : A novella of the Old Tyme Religion Series
It's spring 1986 in Leesburg, Mississippi where the traditions of the old south are still alive and well. When young Michael falls head over heels in love with Delta Rae, the only daughter of a rival business family, it seems like a profitable match. There is one minor problem: Delta Rae is insanely superstitious. She believes there is a curse which will cause her death at the edge of the Mississippi River, a theory seconded by her father. He's certain her death means his business will be given to the black workers he still considers to be property. Michael doesn't believe in curses, and so he promises to protect Delta from her fate-the easiest promise he thinks he'll ever make. But then the Spirit of Destruction appears to Michael at the birth of his son, giving him the option to save his wife and land by sacrificing the child to her. Suddenly Michael is forced to reexamine what he believes and who he is willing to protect. With time running out, he'll discover if you can wash a curse away when it comes bubbling up from the bottom of the river.
